BC Ministry of Health – User Experience, Information Architecture & Content Strategy

Overview
Redesigned and re-architected the BC Ministry of Health’s web presence, consolidating 17,000+ pages into the provincial gov.bc.ca platform.
Aligned the project with the provincial government’s broader digital strategy to improve accessibility, usability, and performance.
My Role
Directed research, designed the information architecture, and developed the content migration strategy in compliance with WCAG, privacy, and security standards.
Problem Statement
The health.gov.bc.ca site was structured by internal departments rather than user needs, resulting in fragmented content and poor navigation.
The site’s 17,000+ pages lacked cohesion and did not align with the government’s evolving digital framework.
Research & Discovery
Conducted a complete content inventory and audit of all web pages.
Led stakeholder interviews and usability testing with healthcare providers, researchers, and citizens to gather business and functional requirements.
Identified navigation pain points, content redundancies, and opportunities for improved accessibility.
Information Architecture
Designed a topic-based, user-centric structure organized into categories such as Health & Safety, B.C. Residents, and Environment.
Created interactive wireframes and prototypes to support content layout and user flows.
Collaborated in agile sprints with product managers, engineers, and content teams to ensure scalability and responsive design across devices.
Impact
Delivered a unified, topic-based architecture that improved content discoverability for citizens and professionals.
Increased task success rates through improved navigation and WCAG-compliant accessibility.
Streamlined content governance processes, reducing duplication and enabling consistent updates across platforms.
